  8.                       NOVELL COMPSURF WITH ESDI DRIVES
  9.

  11. Problems may occur when running Novell's Compsurf Utility with AST's OEM
  12. version of the WD1007 ESDI controller (AST part number 240018-001) and the
  13. Maxtor 4380 320 MB hard drive (AST part number 230055-320).  Examples of some
  14. errors are as follows:
  15.  
  16.     - Abend:  Disk Channel 0 could not reset controller
  17.  
  18.     - Unable to access Sector 14
  19.  
  20.     - Unable to read bad block table
  21.  
  22. To resolve the above problems, you must do the following:
  23.  
  24.     - Do a low-level format using the manufacturer's utility software (i.e.,
  25.       HDFORMAT.EXE for an AST drive).
  26.  
  27.     - Run Novell utility ESDIDISK.EXE.  (Do not attempt more than three
  28.       passes.)
  29.  
  30. NOTE:  The Novell utility ESDIDISK.EXE is available on Novell's Bulletin
  31.        Board (NETWIRE) and is listed as ESDIDR.ZIP in Library 6, Forum A.
  32.        This utility will:
  33.  
  34.        - Check track zero.
  35.  
  36.        - Scan the hard drive surface.
  37.  
  38.        - Put the COMPSURF "stamp" on the drive.
  39.  
  40.        - Create a bad block table that Novell can use.
